Whipple Places in Student Paper Competition
Undergraduate researcher, Wesley Whipple placed 3rd at the 2011 AIChE Southern Regional Student Conference paper Competition held on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Wesley’s’ Paper was titled “Linking Glycerol Dehydration Chemistry and the Biodiesel Lifecycle”.
Whipple Wins Research Award
Undergraduate researcher Wesley Whipple was awarded the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award at the 2011 International Congress of Sustainability Science and Engineering in Tucson, Arizona for his contribution titled “Interfacial Phenomena in Biodiesel Production”.
Research Group Attends ICOSSE11
Dr. Seay along with PhD Student Sumesh Sukumara and undergraduate researcher Wesley Whipple recently attended at the 2011 International Congress of Sustainability Science and Engineering in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Seay served as Chair for the Poster Sessions while Sumesh and Wesley presented the results of their research work.
Sukumara Awarded USEC Fellowship
PhD student Sumesh Sukumara has been awarded the USEC Fellowship for the 2010 – 2011 Academic year. Sumesh is researching the integration of process systems engineering and supply chain management in the development of economic models for sustainable biorefining.
Ramsey Wins Research Award
Undergraduate researcher Andrea Ramsey won the Best Undergraduate Research Award at the 2nd International Symposium on Sustainable Product and Process Engineering held May 9 – 12 in Hangzhou, China for her research titled “Development of Multidisciplinary Region Specific Economic Models for Integrated Biorefining”, coauthored with Sumesh Sukumara and Jeffrey Seay.
Research Group Well Represented in China
Dr. Seay’s group was well represented at the 2nd International Symposium on Sustainable Product and Process Engineering held May 9 – 12 in Hangzhou, China. Undergraduate researchers Luke Richardson and Andrea Ramsey both presented posters on their research work.
UK Group Invited to Participate in P3 Design Competition
A student design group from the University of Kentucky Paducah Extended Campus advised by Dr. Seay and Dr. Charles Lu has been selected to participate in the U.S. EPA People Prosperity and the Planet National Student Design Competition. Refer to the EPA website at www.epa.gov/p3 for more details.
New Graduate Student Joins Research Group
New PhD student Sumesh Sukumara will join the research group in the Spring Semester. Sumesh received his Master’s Degree from Texas A&M, Kingsville, and will be working on research related to sustainable biorefinery optimization.

Undergraduate researcher Andrea Ramsey wins 1st Place in the Environmental Division of the Undergraduate Poster competition at the AIChE Annual Meeting in Nashville, TN.
